Alera is the eldest princess of the kingdom Hytanicain, which works patriarchal (men are able, women stooges and mares)
In peace for many years, the kingdom lives happily.
But Alera bored, and especially hate pretending that his father wants to see her wedding, Steldor, son of the captain of the guards, arrogant and pretentious.
Her daily life is disrupted when, at a party, the high priestess Cokyrienne is arrested in the garden and then fled from prison.
A few days later, another cokyrien was arrested. Cokyrien turns out to be ... hytanicain!
I was offered this book there are nearly a year at a swap Reading Club, and since he slept in my PAL.
Strangely, despite the summary interesting and different positive opinion, I could not bring myself to start.
Different challenges in 2012 made me change my mind, and I do not regret it. Just as I do not regret having waited since have been otherwise wait for Volume 2 while now, I only have a few days to wait ^ ^
Alera is an endearing heroine. Sissi has a side (yes, I admit I'm right Sissi trip right now, this is my reference lol): naïve, sassy and completely superficial, even if, in the story, she ends up taking a little depth (few, but still) and she finally realize the significance of these acts and become a minimum charge.
Around it revolves more interesting characters. London, first of all, his personal bodyguard which we will discover many secrets. I also think it's my second favorite character in this novel.
It is irreverent while being really protective of the princess, he does not hesitate to defy taboos and authority while demonstrating loyalty. While contradiction, it is for me the hero type, and I hope it will grow later
Narian then. He is my No. 1. Kidnapped at birth by Cokyriens, believed dead by his family, and arriving in a new world where everything is upside down from what he knows, the poor must adapt and yet we feel ambivalent home between the desire to fit in and be loved (like the glow in his eyes when Cannan defended him against his father) and his contempt for hytanicaine society as it is.
I remain convinced that his feelings are sincere Alera, and I really hope a turnaround, although I do not see how.
Steldor finally. Son of Cannan, then. It is as you see me, pretentious, arrogant and perverse limited by certain behaviors.
It is described so as to be hated and yet, even if, at first glance, it is horrible, I have a feeling that this is a facade, evidenced by the little touches that may have (as not to force Alera)
Besides that, other characters punctuate the narrative: Cannan, My, the youngest princess, some other bodyguards (I hate that Tardak coming out of my eyes!)
Everything is served by an efficient pen even if sometimes disjointed. The combos are sometimes difficult but the story is fun to read and it ends up being trapped in the plot, wondering what will happen.
The end, it is an apotheosis! I really thought that the marriage would not take place for x or y reasons! I was even more surprised!
Anyway, I loved it, and I now look for more excitement with the second volume planned this month!
